In early June 1969, the North Vietnamese Army’s and the Viet Cong’s second attempt at a general offensive in South Vietnam came to an end. Hoping to inspire a mass uprising against the South Vietnamese government, Le Duan and other Communist Party leaders in Hanoi had launched another “Tet” offensive in late February 1969. Communist forces initiated artillery and mortar attacks on over 100 population centers and military bases throughout the South. The Tet attacks of 1969, however, were far smaller in scale than those of Tet 1968, and they were successfully countered everywhere by allied forces before they fizzled out on June 8.
