Community Outreach

Community Outreach: Chapter 227 is currently involved in multiple community oriented programs (or was in the past) :

We provide scholarships to needy children of Northern Virginia:
Chapter 227 has been actively involved in Northern Virginia scholarships for needy students since it's establishment in 1985. To address the goal of our Chapter to assist veteran families and provide community service, the Chapter is involved with fundraising activities for scholarship purposes. This scholarship program has been expanded in recent years, to provide funds for area schools English teaching classes during the summer months. The English teaching classes provide an opportunity for students to improve their English and become better students.

We provide presentations at area schools and universities on the Vietnam War and its aftermath: Members provide personal and historical presentations of the Vietnam War to the Washington D.C. area school systems. These presentations are given to students ranging from middle school level through university. As Vietnam veterans we wish to ensure an accurate and balanced understanding of the Vietnam War

Since 1987, members of VVA Chapter 227 have shared their Tour of Duty experiences with a multitude of audiences from elementary school students to senior citizens groups. Past speakers have included nurses, Red Cross service personnel, and men and women who served in every capacity in each of the services, from combat to logistical support. Each one had an interesting story to tell.

Having our members share their experiences can help your group gain a respect and understanding for service, and to learn valuable lessons in character and civic responsibility. Those who served during the Vietnam War are one of the greatest resources for understanding what happened during that tumultuous period.

The agenda is flexible and educational. A typical program includes each veteran's Road to Vietnam and his Tour of Duty and a question and answer period.

Chapter members have provided speakers for discussions at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (a/k/a The Wall) and in classrooms of Arlington and Fairfax County Public Schools, Trinity College, University of Maryland, George Mason University, and Northern Virginia Community College.
