24 October Anniversary dinner

Our Thursday, 21 October membership meeting will celebrate the chapter’s 36th anniversary in our annual free dinner for members and their spouses or significant others.  The celebration is at American Legion Post 177, 3939 Oak Street, Fairfax, VA.  The buffet features a salad, two entrees, vegetables, and coffee or iced tea.  The chapter will also provide a special dessert cake.  A cash bar is available from 6 to 7:15 pm (cash only), the dinner starts at 6:45, and the meeting begins at 7:30 when alcoholic beverage consumption is prohibited.  Seating priority will be given to the first 40 respondents.  Members must RSVP to Jay Kalner, Chapter President, by Saturday, 16 October at 703-346-2013 or jaymelissa@aol.com.  The dining area is more than adequate for social distancing and attendees should bring masks.l

Our featured speaker at the dinner will be the legendary Rick Weidman, who retired in June from his position as VVA Executive Director of Policy and Government Affairs after working with six U.S. presidents, countless members of Congress, their staffs, and fellow veterans’ organizations. Rick has worked on Vietnam veterans’ issues for more than two decades at VVA headquarters and served as a mentor and advocate for Gulf War and post-9/11 veterans. After earning a BA degree at Colgate University, Rick served in Vietnam as a combat medic in the Americal Division in I Corps in 1969. Following his tour, he had a brief career in academia before joining the VVA staff in 1979. He served where needed, focusing on growing membership and building relationships on Capitol Hill. He was clearly a Founding Father in shaping VVA’s future path.  He will discuss VVA’s past accomplishments,  current endeavors, and future prospects.
