19 May Membership Meeting

Join us at our Thursday, 19 May membership meeting at the American Legion Post 177, 3939 Oak Street, Fairfax, VA.  We’ll be having our first “Italian night” dinner.  The full course buffet is $18 per person; bring your spouses or significant others.  Please consider bringing a $20 bill (no checks) so we don’t have to worry about change, and the extra $2 can help pay the Legion’s hard-working staff a service fee.  A cash bar is available from 6 to 7:15 pm, the dinner starts at 6:45, and the meeting begins at 7:30 when alcoholic beverage consumption is prohibited.  Members must RSVP to Melissa Kalner by Monday morning, 16 May at 703-819-1480 or mkalner77@gmail.com.  The dining area is more than adequate for social distancing.

Our featured speaker will be Chuck Harris, Chapter 227 Treasurer, who will discuss the Texas Tech conference he attended last month on the 1972 “Easter Offensive” in III Corps. Chuck will discuss, among other issues, why this major NVA campaign was such a surprise to US forces in the final stages of our troop withdrawal. Chuck was originally drafted in December 1965 and served in the Army until April 1992, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. He served two tours in Vietnam in 1968-69 and 1971-72, first as a helicopter gunship pilot and later as an Air Mission Commander in an assault helicopter company. He flew over 1500 combat missions, receiving 61 Air Medals and six awards for valor. Besides his military positions after the war, including in field artillery and Pershing nuclear missiles, he went on to work for over 20 years at Mitre Corporation and served as a volunteer for numerous veterans’ activities. Chuck received a BA at Baylor and an MS at Kansas State.
